In this unit we learned about how artists can steal other peoples work to make their own. A popular term for it is remix. Saying that people will copy, transform and combine different pieces of work for themselves. Some people believe that this idea of stealing peoples original ideas isn't that bad. Kirby Ferguson believes everything is a remix and that's how new ideas are brought forward. In the slides of the art work asking if it is legal or not, it is hard to say. I have no idea if the students asked to use the artwork or if they gave credit. From just looking the first looks illegal because it is the exact same picture, the second is legal because it has it's on take on the first image and has been made original. Appropriation is the use of pre-existing objects or images with little or no transformation applied to them. Parody is to mock, comment or make a joke of someone else's artwork. Fair Use is to take only a small part of someones artwork and then adding your own elements to it. Remix is copy, transform and combine art. I probably prefer pinterest or any other kind of website with a collection of images. For my try at taking an image and changing it I took an animated character and changed them. I took Patrick Star from Spongebob and had his shape but put Spongebob's features and clothes on him, making a mix of the two. For my brainstorming I was thinking of making a portrait out of some type of food, or out of paper clips, something different. Also I could sketch myself looking into a mirror with the back of my head in the shot too. I decided to try the mirror image because I liked that idea the most.
