For this project we picked a cover from New Yorker that we liked and made a piece inspired from that cover. The cover I had was "The Fight Begins" by Eric Drooker. Eric is a graphic novelist and painter that did the animations for the movie Howl. This cover is suppose to represent the Republicans vs the Democrats in the election. For my inspiration I didn't focus on that, I focused on the animals in the ring. I decided to paint a lion , the so called strongest and most brave of them all. The one who would win every time if they were put in a ring. I'm not exactly sure where this came from but it was the first thing I thought of when seeing this cover.

For this project we had to show what we would be like in the future. Without using humans or faces at all. We had to somehow make a piece that showed something about us and what we want to do in the future. I really want to travel a lot when I'm older so I drew the world. I did it on scratch board too because you can really get great textures and style into it.
For this project we used charcoal and a partner to create drawings. We followed each others movements on each side of the paper to create a mirror image together. Christine and I were partners and did two together. Then I did a big body one where you sit in the middle and draw all around you with charcoal. I liked this project because it was a lot of free will in it. We just went for it and made pictures.
For this project we had to pick a word with four or more letters and write them out. We had to have it mean something. Mine said LIFE and every letter was a different type of flower. Such as the L was a lotus flower. We also had to show some negative space, so I left the letters white and the background black. The flowers were colored in with colored pencils while the rest was simple. I like the way it came out and wouldn't really change anything.
For this Charcoal project we had to get a picture of ourselves or someone that shows shadows. We then used charcoal and the skills we learned from Art Proff to make our project. I used cross hatching, white and black charcoal, and shading to make mine as realistic as possible. My model was Janie and I like the way it came out, even though it could be a little better.
For this project we had to make 3 or more blind contour drawings. This is when you look intently at yourself or object and not once at the paper. After we completely the drawings we had to add some color with some different skills. We were only allowed to use 3 or less colors. I enjoyed the way mine came out, and like how messy and chaotic it is.
In this unit we learned about how artists can steal other peoples work to make their own. A popular term for it is remix. Saying that people will copy, transform and combine different pieces of work for themselves. Some people believe that this idea of stealing peoples original ideas isn't that bad. Kirby Ferguson believes everything is a remix and that's how new ideas are brought forward. In the slides of the art work asking if it is legal or not, it is hard to say. I have no idea if the students asked to use the artwork or if they gave credit. From just looking the first looks illegal because it is the exact same picture, the second is legal because it has it's on take on the first image and has been made original. Appropriation is the use of pre-existing objects or images with little or no transformation applied to them. Parody is to mock, comment or make a joke of someone else's artwork. Fair Use is to take only a small part of someones artwork and then adding your own elements to it. Remix is copy, transform and combine art. I probably prefer pinterest or any other kind of website with a collection of images. For my try at taking an image and changing it I took an animated character and changed them. I took Patrick Star from Spongebob and had his shape but put Spongebob's features and clothes on him, making a mix of the two. For my brainstorming I was thinking of making a portrait out of some type of food, or out of paper clips, something different. Also I could sketch myself looking into a mirror with the back of my head in the shot too. I decided to try the mirror image because I liked that idea the most.
In this unit we had to use certain skills to create some art work. We practiced shading and understanding of different techniques. I really enjoy the timed sketches and hopefully will get to continue to do them. Some are harder than others but some really come out good. We also had to shade a draw a sphere following a tutorial. Later on we also followed a tutorial for either an eye or an apple. The sphere at first was a little tricky because you couldn't really see it coming out that well but then really came together. I was bothered at first because I kept thinking it was coming out wrong but was happy with the end result. For the other tutorial I chose the eye and had similar feelings. We also had to chose an artist and learn more about them. I chose Claude Monet because I love his art style. Then I had to try and copy one of his pieces and I tried to recreate one of his straw hut paintings with pencil. It obviously wasn't as good but was fun to try and recreate. Lastly we had to create a piece of artwork that related to this unit. I really wanted to do a pencil sketch/drawing because that's basically what the whole unit was based around. I decided to draw/sketch my cat Frankie. I was happy with the way it came out and kind of liked how it doesn't look fully done and is just black and white. |
